About the album

After two albums and a demo collection in under two years, PJ Harvey spent 1994 out of sight, in a house in the English countryside near her parents' home in Yeovil. With fields in every window and no neighbours to speak of, she wrote the songs for her first proper solo record, steeped in American blues and a good deal of Captain Beefheart.

She co-produced it with Flood and John Parish, the start of a long partnership with both, and recorded at Townhouse Three in Battersea before mixing at Windmill Lane in Dublin. Mick Harvey, Joe Gore and Jean-Marc Butty filled out the band. Much of it was written on a second-hand Yamaha keyboard, and deep organ tones often stand in for bass. "Meet Ze Monsta" and "Long Snake Moan" roar, while "Teclo" and "The Dancer" smoulder.

The video for "Down by the Water," with Harvey in a red satin gown and a spectacular wig, rarely left MTV. It is still the record most people reach for first, and with no neighbours for miles, she was free to turn it up as loud as she liked.
