Peter Gabriel's 1977 solo debut, the one with the car on the cover, as a half-speed remaster on 180g vinyl, with "Solsbury Hill."
This 180g pressing is a half-speed remaster and includes a hi-res download code. The album reached No. 7 in the UK, and "Solsbury Hill" became a No. 13 UK hit.
Leaving Genesis gave Peter Gabriel a blank page and, as it turned out, a Toronto address. In the autumn of 1976 he and Canadian producer Bob Ezrin set up at The Soundstage in Toronto, with extra sessions at Morgan and Olympic in London, and Gabriel later remembered the Toronto sessions as fast, exciting and hot.
Ezrin took charge of the big American rock passages and Gabriel steered the quieter European ones, with a band that included Robert Fripp, Steve Hunter, Dick Wagner, Larry Fast, drummer Allan Schwartzberg and bassist Tony Levin, who also leads a barbershop quartet on "Excuse Me." Hunter plays the acoustic guitar on "Solsbury Hill," "Modern Love" brings the swagger, and "Here Comes the Flood" closes with the London Symphony Orchestra.
His first four albums all carry his name, so fans call this one Car, after the hand-coloured Hipgnosis cover of Gabriel in the back of Storm Thorgerson's Lancia, freshly hosed down in Wandsworth for the shoot. We suspect it's the cleanest that car ever got.
