25th anniversary edition of Paul Simon's 1986 Grammy Album of the Year Graceland: "You Can Call Me Al," "Diamonds on the Soles of Her Shoes" and the title track.
Graceland won the Grammy for Album of the Year and became Paul Simon's most successful solo album, blending his songwriting with South African mbaqanga and isicathamiya. "You Can Call Me Al" is irresistible.
In the mid-'80s Paul Simon was in a creative rut until a friend lent him a bootleg cassette of South African street music. Captivated, he flew to Johannesburg with engineer Roy Halee and recorded with local musicians, then built songs on top of their grooves back in New York, adding guests like Ladysmith Black Mambazo, Los Lobos and the Everly Brothers.
The results are joyful and endlessly rewarding: "You Can Call Me Al" bounces on a famous bass run and penny-whistle hook, "Diamonds on the Soles of Her Shoes" and "Homeless" showcase Ladysmith Black Mambazo's stunning harmonies, and the title track is a gorgeous road song about grief and grace. It won Album of the Year and introduced millions to South African music.
