Pantera's 1996 album The Great Southern Trendkill on numbered white & orange marble vinyl, with "Drag the Waters," "Floods" and the title track.
This numbered white & orange marble pressing is limited to 1,000 copies. The album reached No. 4 on the Billboard 200 and went platinum in the US.
Most bands make records in one room. Pantera made this one in two states: Phil Anselmo cut his vocals at Trent Reznor's Nothing Studios in New Orleans, while Dimebag Darrell, Rex Brown and Vinnie Paul tracked the music at Chasin Jason Studios in Dalworthington Gardens, Texas. Terry Date produced alongside Vinnie Paul, the last time he would sit behind the desk for the band.
The result is widely considered their heaviest album, with screamed vocals, some of their fastest tempos and guitars tuned so low that "The Underground in America" and "(Reprise) Sandblasted Skin" sit below standard D. The title track hits like a freight train, "Drag the Waters" is a classic mid-tempo groove, and "War Nerve" snarls. Then there's "Floods," a slow, brooding epic built around one of Dimebag's most celebrated solos, with acoustic guitars and quieter passages showing a more experimental side of the band. "10's" and "Living Through Me (Hells' Wrath)" round out a record that rarely lets up for breath.
It's the sound of groove metal at its most extreme, and players still study that "Floods" outro note by note. The neighbours, we assume, have been informed.
