Ozzy Osbourne's 1980 solo debut as a picture disc, with Randy Rhoads on guitar and "Crazy Train," "Mr. Crowley" and "I Don't Know."
This limited picture disc carries the album restored from the original source tapes and remastered by George Marino at Sterling Sound. It reached No. 7 in the UK and No. 8 in Canada and has gone four times platinum in the US.
In 1979 Ozzy Osbourne left Black Sabbath and started over. He met a young Californian guitarist named Randy Rhoads, recruited bassist Bob Daisley and drummer Lee Kerslake, and the four of them wrote a record that reintroduced him as a solo star.
Rhoads is the reason so many guitarists still own this album. "Crazy Train" has one of the most famous riffs in metal, "Mr. Crowley" opens with a gothic organ and ends with a soaring solo, and "Dee," a short classical piece named for his mother, shows the training behind the fireworks. "I Don't Know" kicks things off at full tilt, and "Goodbye to Romance" lets Ozzy play the balladeer.
Rhoads' playing here set the template for a generation of shredders. On a picture disc you can at least see the record go round, which is useful when "Crazy Train" has you checking whether the room is still moving.
