Otis Redding live at the Whisky a Go Go in Hollywood, 1966, as a 2LP set on 180g vinyl, with "Respect," "These Arms Of Mine" and "I've Been Loving You Too Long."
This Volt 2LP set gathers highlights from his three-night stand, newly mixed and mastered from the original four-track tapes, in a gatefold with extensive liner notes. It's Otis Redding on stage in his prime, with his band pushing every tempo.
In April 1966 Otis Redding took his band west to the Whisky a Go Go on the Sunset Strip, and Hollywood's rock crowd got a first-hand lesson in Southern soul. Some of those shows reached record buyers in 1968 as In Person at the Whisky a Go Go; this set goes back to the tapes for a fuller picture, produced for this edition by Bill Bentley and Mason Williams.
He opens with "I Can't Turn You Loose" and barely lets up: "Security," "Mr. Pitiful" and "Respect" come at a gallop, while "I've Been Loving You Too Long" and "Chained And Bound" slow the room right down. Then he grabs other people's hits and makes them his own, from "A Hard Day's Night" and "Papa's Got A Brand New Bag" to a supercharged "Satisfaction." "Any Ole Way" and "Destiny" dig deeper into his catalogue.
His grip on a crowd is all over these sides, from the first count-in to the closing roar. By the end of "Satisfaction" you will want to stand up, and we'd advise moving the coffee table first.
