NOFX's 1999 EP The Decline on 12" vinyl: the 18-minute title track on Side A and an alternate "Clams Have Feelings Too" on Side B.
The 12-inch EP puts the full 18-minute "The Decline" on one side, with a vinyl-exclusive alternate "Clams Have Feelings Too" on the flip and a lyric sheet insert. It's the epic NOFX chose to close their final show in San Pedro on October 6, 2024.
Punk bands are not usually known for the 18-minute song, which is precisely why NOFX wrote one. Fat Mike said the idea came from Subhumans rather than prog rock, and after years of short, fast tracks the band decided it was time for a long one. It took three trips back to Motor Studios in San Francisco and four remixes to get right.
"The Decline" shifts gear again and again, from skate-punk sprints to slower, brooding passages, with trombone from Lars Nylander of Skankin' Pickle and a sweeping, satirical look at American life. Fat Mike and Ryan Greene produced, and the B-side "Clams Have Feelings Too" is a different take on the Pump Up the Valuum track.
The song took on a life of its own: a live DVD, an orchestral version with Baz and His Orchestra, and a 2019 performance at Red Rocks. The back cover says to pay no more than $7.00, a promise we've framed and hung somewhere management can't see it.
