About the album

Nilüfer Yanya's mother heard the Turkish pop singer Nilüfer on the radio and decided then and there what she'd call a daughter. The London songwriter grew up in Chelsea on Turkish and classical music, picked up the guitar at 12 and has been bending indie rock, soul and trip hop into her own shapes ever since.

My Method Actor is her first album for Ninja Tune, written and recorded in London, Eastbourne and Wales with her longtime creative partner Will Archer, who produced. "Like I Say (I Runaway)" rides a restless, coiled guitar riff, the title track is all slow-building tension, and "Call It Love" glows softly. "Mutations" and "Binding" show off how much she can do with a pared-back arrangement, while "Just a Western" and the closing "Wingspan" open things right up. Six of the eleven songs were singles, which tells you how strong the batch was.

Year-end lists were kind: Under the Radar ranked it second, Pitchfork 13th and Canada's Exclaim! 14th among the best albums of 2024. A record called My Method Actor that sounds this unguarded is either a clever double bluff or very good acting, and we're happy not knowing which.
