Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds' 1986 covers album Kicking Against the Pricks, remastered on 180g vinyl, with "Long Black Veil," "By The Time I Get To Phoenix" and "The Carnival Is Over."
This remaster was cut at Abbey Road, with Mick Harvey approving the vinyl transfer, and comes on 180g vinyl with a printed inner sleeve of photos and credits. It's the band's third album and the first with drummer Thomas Wydler.
Every great singer keeps a record collection, and Kicking Against the Pricks is Nick Cave pulling his off the shelf. The band drew up a list of songs and tried them all, some as straight tributes, with a lineup of Cave, Wydler, Barry Adamson, Mick Harvey and Blixa Bargeld.
The choices run from John Lee Hooker's "I'm Gonna Kill That Woman" and Johnny Cash's "The Singer" to the Velvet Underground's "All Tomorrow's Parties" and Jimmy Webb's "By The Time I Get To Phoenix." Cave tips his hat to Tom Jones on "Sleeping Annaleah," digs into the country ballad "Long Black Veil" and "Hey Joe," and ends on a gloriously grand reading of the Seekers' "The Carnival Is Over."
Cave said the sessions taught the band to play many different kinds of music well, and you can hear the later records taking shape. The title comes from the King James Bible, easily the most respectable source a Bad Seeds title has ever had.
