About the album

Most best-ofs simply gather the singles. This one rebuilt several of them: "True Faith," "Bizarre Love Triangle," "1963" and "Round & Round" all turn up in fresh 1994 mixes, sitting next to the 1988 version of "Blue Monday," the Manchester band's evergreen dance-floor filler.

Sides A and B run from the shimmering "Regret" through "Fine Time," "The Perfect Kiss," "Shell Shock" and "Thieves Like Us." Side C brings "Run" and "Vanishing Point" from Technique plus "World (Price Of Love)," and Side D finishes with "Touched By The Hand Of God," "Ruined In A Day" and "World In Motion," the 1990 England football anthem with its John Barnes rap. Bernard Sumner, Peter Hook, Stephen Morris and Gillian Gilbert are on fine, melodic form throughout, with Hook's high, singing bass lines running through nearly every track. It plays like a mixtape from someone with very good taste in Manchester.

It's the tidiest route into a band that taught rock fans to dance and dance fans to buy guitars. A companion set, The Rest Of New Order, takes care of the remixes, should one evening of this not be enough.
