My Chemical Romance's Life on the Murder Scene on vinyl: live takes of "Helena," "Thank You for the Venom" and "I'm Not Okay (I Promise)," two demos and "Desert Song."
This LP gathers the audio half of the band's 2006 live set, on vinyl for the first time, with a printed inner sleeve. It catches My Chemical Romance at full tilt in the Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge era, plus the previously unheard "Desert Song."
Every band that breaks big has a moment just before it happens, and Life on the Murder Scene bottles My Chemical Romance's. The original 2006 package came with two DVDs, including a two-hour documentary that AllMusic called insanely detailed, and this record is the music that went with it.
Side A is the live set, recorded for MTV2's $2 Bill, at the Starland Ballroom in New Jersey and at an AOL Sessions taping in February 2004. "Thank You for the Venom," "Cemetery Drive" and "Helena" come out roaring, and Rolling Stone's Jenny Eliscu praised Gerard Way's vocals as top form. Side B adds "The Ghost of You" and "I'm Not Okay (I Promise)," demos of "I Never Told You What I Do for a Living" and "Bury Me in Black" (once a Japanese bonus track), and the Howard Benson-produced "Desert Song," a Revenge outtake.
It reached No. 9 on Billboard's Top Rock Albums chart, and even the cover is a live reenactment of the Three Cheers artwork, which shows a commitment to theatre most bands reserve for their stage lighting.
