About the album

Most musicians who want to tell a story make a concept album. Mitski went one better and scored a comic. This Is Where We Fall is a sci-fi western graphic novel from Z2 Comics, and she wrote its soundtrack, three pieces that move through the book like a film score you play in the background while turning pages. The record first came out alongside the hardcover book in early 2021.

"The Beginning" sets the scene, "The Baddy Man," the first single, leans into a dusty country flavour that fits right alongside her Be the Cowboy years, and "The End" takes up a whole side, a long, sweeping finale. She wrote all of it herself, and it shows the composer's ear that later earned her an Academy Award nomination for Everything Everywhere All at Once.

It's a small, unusual corner of her catalogue and a lovely one for collectors to own on wax. We'd suggest reading the book with it; turning pages to a Mitski score is about as cinematic as a night in gets.
