About the album

There are few contemporary artists who can match Mitski in terms of unflinching emotional honesty, but she also has a sharp, dark sense of humour. Puberty 2, her fourth album and the second not made as a school project while studying studio composition at Purchase College's Conservatory of Music, is full of wry, self-aware wit, starting with the opener "Happy."

That makes it an oddly fun listen. The music matches the emotional territory, too, veering from sad-eyed indie folk to fizzy quiet/loud punk outbursts to burbling electronica at the drop of a hat, and further establishing Mitski as a predictably unpredictable mad genius endlessly capable of surprising us. Real. Deal.
