Minutemen's 1984 punk epic Double Nickels on the Dime as a 2LP set: 45 songs mixing punk, funk, jazz and country, including "History Lesson, Part II" and "Corona."
This SST 2LP set keeps the original four sides, one picked by each band member plus the leftovers side, Side Chaff. It sits on Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time, and critic Mark Deming called it one of the very best American rock albums of the 1980s.
Hearing that your labelmates have made a double album will do things to a band. Minutemen already had an album's worth of songs on tape with producer Ethan James at Radio Tokyo in Venice, California, in November 1983; after Hüsker Dü's Zen Arcade, they wrote almost two dozen more and went back in April 1984. James mixed the lot on a single eight-track in one night, and the whole thing cost $1,100.
D. Boon, Mike Watt and George Hurley gave each member a side, an idea borrowed from Pink Floyd's Ummagumma, and drew straws for first pick. Hurley won and chose "You Need The Glory." Boon wrote the anthems, "This Ain't No Picnic" and "Corona" among them; Watt went for the abstract, with "June 16th" named for the day James Joyce set Ulysses. "Take 5, D." sets a landlady's note about a leaky shower to music, friends including Henry Rollins chip in lyrics, and the covers run from Creedence's "Don't Look Now" to "Ain't Talkin' 'Bout Love" and "Doctor Wu."
The band settled on their cars as the loose concept, and the title is road slang for doing 55 on the highway. A 45-song punk record about keeping to the speed limit; it may be the most law-abiding thing in the racks.
