Miles Davis's 1961 album Someday My Prince Will Come in mono on 180g vinyl, with Hank Mobley, Wynton Kelly and two guest turns from John Coltrane.
This Columbia/Legacy reissue presents the original mono mix on 180g vinyl. It's the one studio date by the Davis quintet with Hank Mobley, and John Coltrane drops back in for two solos.
Two years after Kind of Blue, Miles Davis did something nobody expected and opened an album with a Disney song. The title track comes from Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, and in his hands it turns into a gently swinging waltz, with his wife Frances smiling from the cover.
Hank Mobley plays tenor through most of the record, with Wynton Kelly on piano, Paul Chambers on bass and Jimmy Cobb on drums, and John Coltrane returns for cameo solos on the title track and "Teo." Davis's three originals are all named for people: "Pfrancing" for Frances, "Teo" for producer Teo Macero, and "Drad-Dog" for Columbia boss Goddard Lieberson, spelled backwards. "Old Folks" and "I Thought About You" are pure late-night ballads.
DownBeat's Ira Gitler praised Coltrane's solo and Kelly's playing, and Howard Mandel later called it among Davis's most romantic programs. Naming a tune after your label president, backwards, is either a tribute or a very efficient way of asking for a raise.
