About the album

After Oracular Spectacular made them festival headliners, Andrew VanWyngarden and Ben Goldwasser did the bold thing and headed somewhere stranger. Congratulations trades the synth-pop of the debut for psychedelic, guitar-driven songs, recorded in Malibu with Sonic Boom, the former Spacemen 3 man Peter Kember, and Royal Trux singer Jennifer Herrema adding vocals.

The band wanted it heard as an album, front to back, and streamed it free on their website before it hit shops. "It's Working" opens in a bright jangle, "Song for Dan Treacy" tips its hat to the Television Personalities leader, "Flash Delirium" changes shape every minute, and "Brian Eno" is a hyperactive salute to the man himself. "Siberian Breaks" runs to about 12 minutes, and on this pressing it gets Side C entirely to itself. Anthony Ausgang's cover of a surfing cat about to be swallowed by a wave-shaped cat sets the tone perfectly.

It also went to No. 4 in the UK. A whole vinyl side for one song is either grand ambition or a very efficient way of avoiding a running-order argument, and we suspect both.
