Mac Miller: Circles (2LP) [REMEMBER MUSIC / WARNER]

Why you'll love it

Circles is the companion piece to Swimming that Mac Miller was working on with Jon Brion, finished by Brion with care. It debuted at No. 3 on the Billboard 200 with the biggest first week of Mac's career, and "Good News" is one of his most loved songs.

About the album

Mac Miller had planned Circles as the second half of a pair with 2018's Swimming (swimming in circles, get it?), and he'd been making it with Jon Brion, the producer behind classic records by Fiona Apple and Kanye West. After Mac's passing, Brion and the family finished it together, following Mac's notes and staying true to the sound he wanted.

The result is warm, soft and quietly beautiful, more singer-songwriter than rap record, with Mac singing over plucked guitars, gentle drums and Brion's lovely, lived-in arrangements. "Good News" is a fan favourite, "Blue World" bounces along on a vintage sample, "Complicated" and "Woods" glow, and there's a lovely cover of Arthur Lee's "Everybody." It's the kind of record you put on when you want to feel close to someone.
