About the album

James Murphy covered the studio in silver fabric and tin foil before making this record, which is commitment to a title if ever we saw it. Recorded in 2006 at Long View Farm in Massachusetts and at DFA's own New York studio, it's the album where the dance-punk hero of the debut started writing about getting older, losing people and staying out late anyway.

"Get Innocuous!" opens on a slow-building groove, "North American Scum" is a wry shout from a band abroad, and "Someone Great" turns grief into a glittering synth pulse. Then comes "All My Friends," seven and a half minutes of insistent piano while Murphy wonders where the years went; Pitchfork later named it the second-best song of the 2000s. The closer, "New York, I Love You But You're Bringing Me Down," is a crooked love letter to his home town.

In 2019 The Guardian put it at No. 5 on its list of the 100 best albums of the 21st century. Murphy once called recording his own vocals horrifying, which is a shame for him, because the rest of us have quite enjoyed it.
