LCD Soundsystem's 2017 comeback American Dream as a 2LP set in a gatefold jacket, with "Tonite," "Call the Police" and "Oh Baby."
This 2LP set comes in a gatefold jacket with a download card, and every side ends in a locked groove. It was the band's first No. 1 album in the US and Canada, and "Tonite" won the Grammy for Best Dance Recording.
In 2011 LCD Soundsystem said goodbye with a farewell show at Madison Square Garden, documentary and all. A few years later James Murphy invited Nancy Whang and Pat Mahoney round to his apartment to talk about a new record, they both said yes, and the band was back, signed to Columbia and headlining Coachella in 2016. They recorded the album in several locations, with Murphy producing and the reunited lineup playing together again.
Murphy produced it, and critics heard echoes of David Bowie's Berlin trilogy. "Oh Baby" opens in a soft synth haze, "Other Voices" and "Tonite" are wiry dance tracks that take stock of getting older, "How Do You Sleep?" builds into slow thunder, "Call the Police" is a rousing rock anthem, and the closer "Black Screen" is a long, tender homage to Bowie.
Mojo and Uncut both named it their album of the year. Not many farewells turn out this productive; we've had staff leaving parties that achieved considerably less.
