Lagwagon's 1995 third album Hoss as a remastered, expanded 2LP set, with a bonus LP of demos and rarities and "Razor Burn" and "Violins."
This deluxe gatefold 2LP set remasters Hoss and adds a whole bonus LP of era-specific demos and rarities. It's a cornerstone of the 1990s Fat Wreck Chords sound, and "Razor Burn" is one of the band's best known songs.
Few punk records come with a Western television star on the front. Hoss puts Dan Blocker, in character as Bonanza's gentle giant Hoss Cartwright, on the cover, and the songs inside are every bit as big-hearted. It came out on Fat Wreck Chords in November 1995, the Santa Barbara band's third album and the last with drummer Derrick Plourde and guitarist Shawn Dewey.
Ryan Greene produced, recorded and mixed it, and the playing is fast, tight and melodic, with Joey Cape's sharp lyrics riding over the twin guitars of Dewey and Chris Flippin and Jesse Buglione's bass. "Kids Don't Like to Share" tears the lid off, "Violins" and "Sleep" show how much tune they could pack into two minutes, and "Razor Burn" became a staple, with tour footage in its video. "Black Eyes" and "Bro Dependent" round out the set. The bonus LP adds early takes like "Name Dropping (Early Version)," an acoustic "Black Eyes," demos and the "Derrick Instrumental."
Joey Cape and Chad Williams coordinated the reissue, so the extras come with the band's blessing. It's about as close as a skate punk record gets to a Sunday roast with all the trimmings.
