About the album

The Followill brothers spent their childhood in the back of a purple 1988 Oldsmobile, following their preacher father around the revival circuit of the American South, so by their second album they had plenty of road in them already. Caleb, Nathan and Jared, with cousin Matthew on lead guitar, had broken through in Britain first, and they came back looser, scrappier and more sure of themselves.

Ethan Johns and Angelo Petraglia, the songwriter who had helped the brothers find their feet in Nashville, produced it at Three Crows Studio in Los Angeles, working on The Beatles' old Abbey Road mixing desk. "The Bucket" and "Four Kicks" are lean garage-rock singles, "King Of The Rodeo" swaggers, "Slow Night, So Long" opens on a lazy drawl, "Taper Jean Girl" and "Pistol Of Fire" bring the strut, and "Milk" and "Day Old Blues" slow things to a Southern crawl.

It earned a place in 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die. It also remains the one Kings of Leon album with a Parental Advisory sticker, so you may want to file it on a higher shelf.
