King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard's 2017 prog epic Polygondwanaland on limited edition multicoloured vinyl, with a fold-out poster.
This limited edition pressing on segmented multicoloured vinyl comes from Flightless and ATO with a fold-out poster and a download of live performances. Pitchfork ranked the album among its 20 best rock albums of 2017, and it holds a 78 on Metacritic.
Most bands guard their master tapes like the family silver. King Gizzard put theirs online. Polygondwanaland arrived on 17 November 2017, the fourth of the five albums the Melbourne band put out that year, under a Creative Commons licence, with the masters and artwork free to download so fans could press their own CDs and vinyl. Jason Galea's artwork templates went up with them.
Stu Mackenzie produced it at Flightless HQ and at Tender Trap Studios in Melbourne, where they cut "Crumbling Castle" and "The Fourth Colour." The opener runs nearly eleven minutes and sets the tone, a winding, interlocking prog trip that flows straight into the title track and "The Castle In The Air," before side B picks up speed through "Inner Cell," "Loyalty," "Horology" and "Tetrachromacy." Sam Joseph mixed it, Joe Carra mastered it, and the ten tracks run just under 44 minutes.
Labels and fans around the world took the band up on the offer. This is the house edition, which is a bit like getting the recipe from the chef.
