About the album

New Year's Eve is usually for parties. King Gizzard spent it hitting a deadline. The Melbourne band had promised five studio albums in 2017, and Gumboot Soup landed on 31 December to make good on it, taking the slot of a song cycle the band would keep polishing until 2022.

Stu Mackenzie described it as a collection of songs that didn't fit the other four albums, and it's the most song-focused of the lot. "Beginner's Luck" and "All Is Known" came out as previews on 13 December, the heavy, swampy "Greenhouse Heat Death" followed on the 19th and "The Last Oasis" a day later, while "Superposition," "The Great Chain Of Being" and "I'm Sleepin' In" show just how far the band's range stretches in one sitting.

Pitchfork gave it 7.7. Five albums in twelve months is the kind of output we'd normally expect from a printing press; we managed one newsletter in the same period and felt quite pleased with ourselves.
