About the album

Some collaborations are arranged by managers. This one started on the radio: in March 2022 JPEGMAFIA played an NTS session in London and, around the 39-minute mark, slipped in an early version of "Burfict!" with Danny Brown on it. A year of teasing later, the two rappers had a full album, and Brown had a new nickname for his partner, Peggy.

JPEGMAFIA produced the lot, mostly on a Roland SP-404SX, and called the process a practice session, with no Pro Tools in sight. He samples soul, gospel and 2000s pop with a free hand, while the two trade verses with a raw, almost punk edge. "Lean Beef Patty" came out first, the title track followed, and "Steppa Pig," "Garbage Pale Kids" and "God Loves You" keep the chaos coming. Maryland rapper Redveil makes the album's sole guest appearance. It's restless, funny and loud, and the beats switch direction so often that the album plays like a mixtape made by two friends daring each other.

Critics loved the chemistry, and the pair took the record on a 20-city North American tour that summer. If this is what they call a practice session, we'd quite like a ticket to the actual show.
