Jorge Ben's 1975 samba rock album Solta o Pavão on colour vinyl, with "Zagueiro" and "Para Ouvir No Rádio (Luciana)."
This Survival Research edition comes on colour vinyl. Ben wrote every song, and lush flute and string arrangements frame his easy samba rock groove.
The title translates as unleash the peacock, and Ben meant it as a nudge to let your inner beauty out. Already a national star since Mas Que Nada in the early 1960s (he later added Jor to his name), by 1975 he had moved through samba, bossa nova, Jovem Guarda rock and Tropicália, and Solta o Pavão finds him settled into the warm, lushly produced samba rock sound he made his own.
Opener "Zagueiro" is a playful tribute to football's centre-backs, "Para Ouvir No Rádio (Luciana)" is a love song lifted by flute and strings, and "Jorge de Capadócia" salutes his namesake, St. George. "Dorothy," "Cuidado Com O Bulldog" and "Se Segura Malandro" keep the groove rolling, and producer Paulinho Tapajós adds the occasional string synth for a little extra shimmer, with Ben's acoustic guitar at the heart of it all.
It closes on Jesualda, a heady ballad about a chance meeting, and you'll want to flip straight back to side one. Any record that writes a love song to central defenders has a permanent home on our shelves, and our five-a-side team is grateful.
