Jamiroquai's 1999 fourth album Synkronized on 180g vinyl, with "Canned Heat," "Supersonic" and the bonus single "Deeper Underground."
This 180g LP comes in a gatefold jacket and adds "Deeper Underground" as a bonus track. Synkronized went to No. 1 on the UK Albums Chart, and "Deeper Underground" was a UK No. 1 single.
Nick Fyffe was hoping to audition for a Jamiroquai tribute band and ended up as Jamiroquai's actual bassist. Stuart Zender had left partway through the sessions at Jay Kay's Buckinghamshire home studio, so the band started again with Fyffe and had the new version finished within six months.
"Canned Heat" opens with svelte, Chic-style strings and a stomping four-on-the-floor beat, "Planet Home" is straight, bass-driven funk with a Latin hustle breakdown, and "Black Capricorn Day" stutters along on sassy horns. Jay Kay and Al Stone produced it, Simon Hale wrote the string arrangements and The Kick Horns supplied the brass, with "Supersonic" and "King for a Day" pushing deeper into disco. "Falling" and "Butterfly" slow things down, and "Soul Education" is about the instinctive understanding of universal truths we are all born with, as Kay explained it.
In the US it came out on Work Group, and in the UK on S2. It also reached No. 28 on the Billboard 200 in the US. Synkronized was the last Jamiroquai album with Wallis Buchanan on didgeridoo, which we mention partly for the history and partly because we so rarely get to type the word didgeridoo.
