About the album

Most bands take a long breather after a world tour. Imagine Dragons finished the Evolve tour in September 2018 and had a new album out two months later, because Dan Reynolds felt the songs were ready and wouldn't feel the same if they waited. He called Origins a sister album to Evolve, the second half of a single cycle.

The band produced much of it with Mattman & Robin, John Hill, Joel Little and Alex da Kid, mixing stadium drums with electro-pop sheen. "Natural" is a thunderous, stomping anthem, "Machine" grinds and clanks, "Bad Liar" is a stripped-back, aching ballad, and "Zero" bounces along with cartoon-ready energy. "Birds" later became a single with Italian singer Elisa, and "West Coast" and "Boomerang" show their lighter side. The songs swing between big, hopeful choruses and darker, more personal moments, the balance that has always made the band work on the radio and in arenas.

"Natural" went on to soundtrack sports broadcasts and arena intros everywhere. If you've heard it at a hockey game, that's no accident; it was practically built for the walk-out.
