About the album

After two Stooges albums, Iggy Pop signed to Columbia as a solo artist and moved to London to write with guitarist James Williamson. When they couldn't find an English rhythm section, Williamson suggested calling the Asheton brothers, and Scott on drums and Ron (switching to bass) flew over. The reunited band became Iggy and the Stooges, and between September and October 1972 they recorded at CBS Studios in London with engineer Mike Ross-Trevor.

Williamson co-wrote all eight songs and his guitar is the whole weather system: "Search and Destroy" explodes out of the gate, "Raw Power" and "Shake Appeal" never let up, and "Death Trip" closes in a glorious frenzy. Columbia asked for two ballads, one per side, and got "Gimme Danger" and "I Need Somebody," both of them as menacing as anything else here. David Bowie helped with the mix at Western Sound in Hollywood, which is the version this pressing uses, rather than Iggy's louder 1997 remix.

The Sex Pistols, Johnny Marr and Kurt Cobain all took notes from Williamson's sound. The label wanted ballads, and to be fair, that is technically what it got.
