About the album

There aren't many rock bands where the two most important people are sisters, and fewer still where one of them plays guitar like she's trying to start an avalanche. Heart grew up between Seattle and Vancouver, made their first records for Vancouver's Mushroom label, and by the late 70s had turned Ann Wilson's huge voice and Nancy Wilson's guitar into a run of rock radio staples.

Everything you'd hope for is here. "Magic Man" and "Crazy on You" (that acoustic intro still stops conversations) come from Dreamboat Annie, "Barracuda" gallops in on one of the great riffs of the decade, and "Straight On," "Dog & Butterfly" and "Even It Up" show the band could do sleek, folky and funky too. "Tell It Like It Is" is a soulful cover, and "How Can I Refuse" carries the story into the 80s.

The collection first came out in 1998 as the first of two volumes, with Greatest Hits: 1985 to 1995 picking up the power-ballad years. Start here and work forward; we promise not to ask which Wilson sister is your favourite.
