Harry Styles' first solo album swapped boy-band pop for '70s-style soft rock and glam, and it worked: it went to No. 1 in the US and the UK, and "Sign of the Times" is a modern power ballad for the ages.
After One Direction went on hiatus, Harry Styles took a hard left turn. He holed up with producer Jeff Bhasker and a small band, partly in Jamaica, and came back with an album that owes more to the Rolling Stones, Fleetwood Mac and Bowie than to anything on Top 40 radio at the time.
"Sign of the Times" is a nearly six-minute piano ballad that builds into something enormous, "Kiwi" is a rowdy glam stomper, and "Two Ghosts," "Sweet Creature" and "Meet Me in the Hallway" show off a gentle, folky side. It debuted at No. 1 around the world and made it clear he was going to be a rock star, not just a pop star.
