About the album

Daryl Hall and John Oates met in Philadelphia in the late 1960s, two students who both loved the city's soul music, and spent the next decade and a half turning that love into some of the slickest pop on the radio. They called what they did rock and soul, and this collection shows exactly how far it travelled.

The early, Philly-soul side is here in "She's Gone" and the gorgeous "Sara Smile," written for Hall's partner Sara Allen. Then the hits come in a rush: "You Make My Dreams (Come True)" with its bouncing piano, the drum-machine cool of "I Can't Go for That (No Can Do)," the sultry sax of "Maneater," and the big mid-80s sheen of "Out of Touch" and "Method of Modern Love." "Say It Isn't So," "One on One," "Family Man" and "Adult Education" round out a sequence with no filler in sight.

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inducted them in 2014, and "You Make My Dreams" has enjoyed a whole second life in films and on the internet. Put side one on at a party and you'll find out who in the room has secretly learned the bassline to "I Can't Go for That."
