Jason Lytle's solo piano retelling of Grandaddy's 2000 album The Sophtware Slump, on eco mix citrus yellow vinyl.
This edition comes on eco mix citrus yellow vinyl. Lytle recorded the whole album again alone at the piano in 2020, twenty years after The Sophtware Slump first came out, from "He's Simple, He's Dumb, He's The Pilot" to "So You'll Aim Toward The Sky."
The Sophtware Slump has always been a quietly futuristic record about machines with feelings and people who have run a little low on them. Jason Lytle wrote and recorded the original alone in a dusty farmhouse, and in 2020 he went back to it alone again, this time with a wooden piano and none of the synth clutter.
Stripped back, the songs show how sturdy they were all along. "Hewlett's Daughter" and "The Crystal Lake" keep their lovely melodies, "Jed The Humanoid," Lytle's elegy for a robot, becomes even more tender, and "Broken Household Appliance National Forest" turns from fuzz into a gentle parlour piece. The long opener "He's Simple, He's Dumb, He's The Pilot" unfolds slowly, and "Miner At The Dial-A-View," which began life as a 1989 home demo, fits the piano like a glove.
Dangerbird Records put it out on November 20, 2020, as a companion to the original. It is the gentlest possible way to hear a record about technology, and the piano never once asks you to update it.
