Gorilla Biscuits' 1989 hardcore classic Start Today in a 25th anniversary edition, with "New Direction," "Degradation" and the title track.
This 25th anniversary edition brings back Revelation Records' best-selling album, which has sold more than 100,000 copies on CD alone. NME ranked it among the 15 best hardcore punk albums.
Plenty of hardcore bands sounded angry; Gorilla Biscuits sounded like they wanted you to get up and do something about it. Walter Schreifels wrote most of the songs, Anthony (Civ) Civarelli shouted them, and with Alex Brown, Arthur Smilios and Luke Abbey they cut Start Today at Demo² Studios in New York between January and April 1989, co-producing with Don Fury.
"New Direction" kicks things off with one of the best-known riffs in New York hardcore, "Degradation" and "Stand Still" are pure forward motion, and the title track is a pep talk with distortion. Upbeat and straight edge, it's the youth crew era at its most uplifting, and the songs are built for singalongs at the front of the stage.
Schreifels went on to form Quicksand, and the record still turns up on hardcore best-of lists decades later. At under 25 minutes, it's also the most efficient self-improvement plan we stock.
