Future: Hndrxx (2LP) [EPIC]

Why you'll love it

This 2LP set spreads all 19 songs of Hndrxx across four sides. It debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 a week after his self-titled album did the same, making Future the first artist ever to top the chart in consecutive weeks with two different albums.

About the album

Future put out two albums a week apart in February 2017. The first, Future, was the hard, trap-heavy one. Hndrxx, named after his alter ego Future Hendrix, arrived a week later as its softer, more confessional twin, aimed squarely at the radio and the late-night drive home.

"Selfish" pairs him with Rihanna over a cool, sparse beat from Detail and peaked at No. 37 on the Hot 100, while "You da Baddest" with Nicki Minaj climbed to No. 38. "Comin' Out Strong" floats on The Weeknd's falsetto, "Incredible" glides on a Dre Moon production, "Damage" borrows from Guy's "Piece of My Love" and "Neva Missa Lost" nods to Jodeci. Executive producers DJ Esco and Rodney Hill keep the mood glossy and wistful from start to finish, and Future sings far more than he raps, leaning into the melodies like a man who has just discovered he enjoys them.

Pitchfork heard a near-perfect balance between a man licking his wounds and one walking out of a long, dark night, and Complex, Fact and Entertainment Weekly all put it on their year-end lists. Of the two Futures who turned up that month, this is the one you'd bring home to meet your parents.
