Franz Ferdinand's Mercury Prize-winning 2004 debut: "Take Me Out," "The Dark of the Matinée," "Michael" and "This Fire."
Franz Ferdinand's debut won the 2004 Mercury Prize, earned a Grammy nomination and sold over 3.6 million copies. "Take Me Out" and its famous tempo switch made Glasgow's art-school dandies stars.
Franz Ferdinand formed in Glasgow with one simple goal: to make music girls could dance to. Recorded in Malmö, Sweden with producer Tore Johansson, their debut took post-punk's angular guitars (think Gang of Four, Josef K and Orange Juice) and polished them into irresistible, wiry pop songs with a wink.
"Take Me Out" is the one everyone knows, with its sudden switch from jittery intro to stomping, disco-punk riff, "The Dark of the Matinée" and "Michael" are sly and funny, "Jacqueline" builds from a whisper to a sprint, and "This Fire" is a terrific closer. It won the Mercury Prize and helped kick off a whole wave of dance-floor indie rock.
