Flume's self-titled debut, the Australian producer's No. 1 album with "Holdin On," "Sleepless" and "Left Alone" with Chet Faker.
This Mom+Pop LP is the North American edition of Flume's debut. It went to No. 1 in Australia, went double platinum there and won Australian Album of the Year at the 2013 J Awards.
Harley Streten was in his early twenties when this album went to No. 1 in Australia. Issued at home on Future Classic in late 2012 and picked up by Mom+Pop for North America, it turned a Sydney bedroom producer into one of electronic music's biggest names.
The sound is lush, wonky and warm: chopped vocal samples, woozy synths and beats that lurch just behind the groove. "Holdin On" and "On Top" with T.Shirt are the bangers, "Sleepless" with Jezzabell Doran floats, and "Left Alone" pairs him with Chet Faker in a smoky slow jam. Moon Holiday sings on "Insane" and George Maple on "Bring You Down," while instrumentals like "Sintra" and "Space Cadet" show off his ear for texture. It also topped the Australian independent chart and reached No. 12 in New Zealand.
It went gold in New Zealand and ended up among Australia's best-selling albums of the 2010s. Not bad for a debut; at that age most of us were still working out the washing machine.
