Floating Points, Pharoah Sanders and the London Symphony Orchestra's 2021 masterpiece Promises, one transcendent 46-minute piece in nine movements.
Promises was shortlisted for the Mercury Prize and named one of the best albums of 2021 just about everywhere. It was the final album from jazz giant Pharoah Sanders.
British producer Sam Shepherd, aka Floating Points, spent five years crafting Promises with the legendary saxophonist Pharoah Sanders, then brought in the London Symphony Orchestra to complete it. The result is one continuous composition: a shimmering, seven-note harpsichord and piano motif repeats while Sanders' tenor sings, soars and murmurs above it.
Slowly, synths and strings bloom around them until the orchestra swells into one of the most breathtaking moments in modern music, then everything drifts back to stillness. Put it on, close your eyes and let it take you somewhere.
