Why you'll love it

Yoshimi won a Grammy for Best Rock Instrumental Performance ("Approaching Pavonis Mons by Balloon"), went gold, and became a stage musical. "Do You Realize??" is Oklahoma's official state rock song. Really.

About the album

After the orchestral psych-pop of The Soft Bulletin, Wayne Coyne and his Oklahoma oddballs went somewhere even stranger and sweeter. Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots mixes acoustic guitars, drum machines, hip-hop-style beats and lush synthesizers into something like a sci-fi anime fairy tale: a black-belt heroine fighting evil machines, with songs about love, mortality and what it means to have feelings at all.

It sounds whimsical, and it is, but it's also quietly devastating. "Do You Realize??" somehow became a joyful singalong and, later, the official rock song of the state of Oklahoma, while "Fight Test" and "In the Morning of the Magicians" are as gorgeous as anything the band ever made. It's the Lips' most-loved record for a reason.
