About the album

After a year and a half of hard graft as a duo, Annie Lennox and Dave Stewart moved into the attic of an old warehouse in Chalk Farm, north London, and spent seven months making a record on an 8-track. The finishing touches went down in a small room at the Church Studios.

The gear was modest, a Roland synth, a Movement drum computer, a borrowed Oberheim and a Gretsch slide guitar, but the ideas were huge. The title song's cold, hypnotic synth line made Lennox's voice sound like a transmission from somewhere stranger, "Love Is a Stranger" became a hit on its second go, "The Walk" and "This Is the House" bring the brass and the bounce, and Scritti Politti's Green Gartside joins them on "Wrap It Up."

Stewart called it "one of the most important records of 1983," and it set the template for a decade of synth pop with a soul. Seven months living and working in an attic in Chalk Farm also makes it, by our count, one of the earliest work-from-home success stories.
