About the album

Ethel Cain is a character as well as a singer, and Preacher's Daughter is her story, told as one long, cinematic story. Drawing on her own life as the daughter of a deacon, she built a fictional family saga out of that world, with church, small towns and the open road all in the frame.

She wrote and produced every track, with help from Steven Mark Colyer and Matthew Tomasi on a few. "American Teenager" is a big, bright heartland anthem, "A House in Nebraska" stretches into a slow-burning epic, "Gibson Girl" slinks, and "Strangers" closes with a gorgeous swell. Americana, dark ambient and roots rock all feed the sound, and Florence Welch was a key inspiration for the vocals. "Thoroughfare" rolls on for a long, lovely road-trip stretch, and "Family Tree" plays out the opening theme in full.

She took the album out on her first two tours, starting with the Freezer Bride Tour in 2022. Plenty of debuts introduce an artist; this one introduces an entire family, and they're all here on four sides.
