Dire Straits' 1978 debut album, home of "Sultans of Swing," "Down to the Waterline," "Water of Love" and "Lions."
Dire Straits' debut topped the charts in Germany, Australia and beyond, and "Sultans of Swing" made Mark Knopfler one of the most recognizable guitarists on the planet.
In the middle of the punk explosion, a quartet of Londoners led by guitarist and songwriter Mark Knopfler went the other way: clean, crisp, fingerpicked guitar, laid-back grooves and storytelling lyrics that owed more to J.J. Cale and Chet Atkins than to punk.
"Sultans of Swing" became a worldwide hit, and the rest of the album is just as tasty: "Down to the Waterline," "Water of Love," "Setting Me Up" and "Lions" all show off Knopfler's warm, liquid tone. A classic debut.
