The Dillinger Escape Plan's 2004 second album Miss Machine on blue-green, white, silver & blue splatter vinyl, the record that introduced singer Greg Puciato.
This Relapse edition comes on blue-green, white, silver & blue splatter vinyl. Miss Machine holds a Metacritic score of 80 and gave the world "Panasonic Youth," "Unretrofied" and "Setting Fire to Sleeping Giants."
Five years is a long gap in hardcore, and The Dillinger Escape Plan spent it widening their horizons. Between their debut and this one they made an EP with Mike Patton on vocals, then found a permanent frontman in Greg Puciato, while bassist Liam Wilson also made his first appearance here. Producer Steve Evetts manned the desk, and Relapse put it out in July 2004.
Patton's experimental streak rubbed off, and so did the industrial pull of Nine Inch Nails and Puciato's side project Error. Ben Weinman's guitars and Chris Pennie's drums leave room for jazz-fusion chords, electronics, slower tempos and actual singing, so "Panasonic Youth" detonates at the start while "Unretrofied" and "Setting Fire to Sleeping Giants" let the hooks through. Until 2007's Ire Works it stood as their most experimental record, and arguably their most accessible too, with more straightforward song structures. Neurosis's Josh Graham directed all three videos.
Brooklyn Vegan later argued that calling it mathcore undersells it. AllMusic decided the next true image of rock and roll had crawled out of the swamps of Jersey, which we gather counts as a compliment in New Jersey.
