Common's 1994 second album as a 30th anniversary 2LP set on multi-coloured swirl vinyl, with "I Used to Love H.E.R." and remixes of "Resurrection."
This 30th anniversary 2LP set comes on multi-coloured swirl vinyl in a gatefold jacket with a wraparound obi and extended liner notes, limited to 2,000 copies. In 1998 The Source named Resurrection one of its 100 Best Hip Hop Albums.
Long before the world knew him by one word, Common was a young Chicago rapper still going by Common Sense. He cut Resurrection in 1994 at Battery Studios in Chicago with his friend No I.D. handling almost all of the beats, a warm, jazzy, sample-rich sound built from dusty records.
"I Used to Love H.E.R." is the one everybody knows, a love story that slowly reveals itself as a story about hip hop itself. "Book of Life" and "In My Own World (Check the Method)" show off his wordplay, and the album closes with "Pop's Rap," the first of the spoken-word pieces his father, Lonnie "Pops" Lynn, would add to his records. This set adds "Resurrection '95" and remixes from Large Professor.
Rolling Stone put it in the same breath as Illmatic and Ready to Die at the time. Thirty years on, his dad still gets the last word, which is a family arrangement we can all respect.
