About the album

Common was already a respected Chicago MC when he fell in with the Soulquarians, the loose collective of Questlove, J Dilla, James Poyser, D'Angelo and bassist Pino Palladino who hung out and recorded at Electric Lady Studios in New York. Like Water for Chocolate is the warm, soulful, jazzy result, and it made him a star.

"The Light," built on a Bobby Caldwell sample, is one of the great hip hop love songs, "The 6th Sense" (produced by DJ Premier) is sharp and conscious, "Geto Heaven Part Two" features D'Angelo, and "Nag Champa" and "Time Travelin' (A Tribute to Fela)" show off Dilla's magic. The cover is Gordon Parks' powerful 1956 photo of a young Black woman at a segregated water fountain in Alabama.
