Between the Buried and Me's 2009 album The Great Misdirect as a newly remixed and remastered 2LP set, with "Obfuscation" and the epic "Swim to the Moon."
This 10th anniversary 2LP set from Craft is newly remixed and remastered by producer Jamie King, in a gatefold jacket. Six songs spread over four sides give the band's longest pieces room to breathe.
Between the Buried and Me had already described their sound as adult contemporary progressive death metal, which tells you how seriously they take labels and how seriously they take playing. The Raleigh, North Carolina band went into the studio on May 31, 2009 to follow Colors, and came out with The Great Misdirect. By then they were seasoned road dogs, with Ozzfest dates and Progressive Nation '08 alongside Dream Theater and Opeth behind them.
It's nearly an hour of music. "Mirrors" eases in before "Obfuscation," the lead single, explodes into brutal riffs and twisting time signatures. "Disease, Injury, Madness" and "Fossil Genera, A Feed from Cloud Mountain" swing from death metal to jazz, lounge and vaudeville, and "Swim to the Moon" closes with a sprawling journey of nearly 18 minutes. Tommy Rogers, Paul Waggoner, Dustie Waring, Dan Briggs and Blake Richardson play it all with astonishing control. Jamie King produced, engineered and mixed it.
That autumn they toured Canada with Killswitch Engage and In Flames, with Protest the Hero in support. Anyone who can follow every time change on side D gets a gold star and a lie down.
