Brian Eno's 1975 album Another Green World, the bridge from his art-rock songs to ambient music, with Robert Fripp, Phil Collins and John Cale, on 180g vinyl.
This remastered 180g edition gives the album's delicate textures a quiet, clean surface to float on. Rolling Stone, NME and Pitchfork have all named it among the greatest albums of the 1970s.
Brian Eno walked into Island Studios in Notting Hill in the summer of 1975 with nothing written. Four unproductive days later he reached for his Oblique Strategies cards, the deck of instructions he'd designed for exactly this kind of moment, and the album started to appear. Five of the fourteen tracks have vocals; the rest are small, lovely instrumental worlds.
The cast is remarkable: Robert Fripp on guitar, Phil Collins on drums, Percy Jones on fretless bass, Rod Melvin on piano and John Cale on viola, with Eno credited on instruments of his own invention, among them "snake guitar" and "uncertain piano." "St. Elmo's Fire" features a dazzling Fripp solo, "I'll Come Running" and "Golden Hours" are gentle, sunlit songs, and "Becalmed" and "Spirits Drifting" point straight toward Music for Airports. The cover is a detail from Tom Phillips' painting After Raphael.
Our own Renée put it best on her staff pick card: "It is riveting, it is transplendent. It leaves nothing to be desired. Simple as." We've checked, and transplendent is in the dictionary, which is more than can be said for an uncertain piano.
