Blood Orange's 2011 debut Coastal Grooves, Dev Hynes' falsetto love letter to 1980s New York: "Champagne Coast," "Sutphin Boulevard" and "Forget It."
On order
Coastal Grooves was Dev Hynes' first record as Blood Orange, a moody, glamorous mix of post-punk guitar, '80s R&B and indie pop. "Champagne Coast" became a viral hit more than a decade later.
Before he was producing for Solange and Carly Rae Jepsen, Devonté Hynes made Coastal Grooves, his first album as Blood Orange. Recorded in Los Angeles with Ariel Rechtshaid, it's built on chiming guitars, drum machines and Hynes' falsetto, and it's steeped in the glamour and grit of New York nightlife in the 1980s.
"Sutphin Boulevard" and "Forget It" have a cool, nervy post-punk edge, "I'm Sorry We Lied" is a slow-burning heartbreaker, and "Champagne Coast" became a surprise hit when it took off online in 2024, sending a whole new generation back to this record.
