Beach House's hazy, gorgeous 2015 album: "Space Song," "Levitation" and "PPP."
"Space Song" went from album track to viral phenomenon, racking up a billion streams years after the fact, and Depression Cherry has become the Beach House album a whole new generation found first.
After touring Bloom to exhaustion, Victoria Legrand and Alex Scally took a break and came back wanting less: fewer live drums, simpler arrangements, more space. Depression Cherry is the result, a slow-motion dream of an album built on drum machines, wheezing organs, shimmering slide guitar and Legrand's smoky, androgynous voice, produced again with longtime collaborator Chris Coady.
It drifts beautifully from the opening organ swell of "Levitation" to the fuzz-drenched "Sparks" and the hushed closer "Days of Candy," but it's "Space Song" that took on a life of its own. Its descending synth line and woozy chorus quietly became one of the most-streamed indie songs of the century. Put it on, turn the lights down and float.
