Bad Brains' 1982 debut, the legendary Yellow Tape, with "Banned in D.C.," "Sailin' On" and "Big Takeover."
Thirty-odd minutes of the fastest, most ferocious hardcore ever recorded, broken up by deep reggae; the Yellow Tape changed punk for good.
Fans still call it the Yellow Tape, after the cassette-only ROIR edition it first came out on in 1982. Banned from just about every club in Washington, DC, Bad Brains moved to New York, played CBGB's and cut this in a 60-foot room on Avenue A called 171-A Studios.
What came out is a blur of chaotic drums and blown-out guitars: "Sailin' On," "Banned in D.C.," "Attitude" and "Big Takeover" hit at impossible speed, H.R. howling over the top. Then the band drop into roots reggae on "Jah Calling" and "I Luv I Jah" without missing a beat.
Musicians from the Beastie Boys to the Foo Fighters have named it a life-changer, and it's routinely ranked among the greatest hardcore records ever made. If you own one hardcore album, it should probably be this one.
