About the album

Originally out in 1998, Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie is the fourth album by Alanis Morissette. The album moves on from her post-grunge sound, taking inspiration from Middle Eastern spiritual music, trip hop and electronica, resulting in a complex, experimental musical journey. It is certified triple platinum in the US and, at the time, broke the record for the highest opening-week sales by a female artist.

Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie features the singles "Unsent," "That I Would Be Good," "So Pure" and the Grammy-nominated "Thank U." Glen Ballard, her co-writer and producer on Jagged Little Pill, produced again and plays guitar, piano and synths, while Morissette adds harmonica and flute. In honour of the album's 25th anniversary, Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie is newly reissued as a double album.

Much of it grew out of a trip to India after the long Jagged Little Pill tour, and the cover carries phrases from eight Buddhist precepts. The songs wander away from verse-chorus habits into stream-of-consciousness territory, and the album takes its title from a line in "So Pure." It's a record about letting go of things, which is a fine theme for an album you'll want to keep forever.
